Tooth fairy mishap

OK, so I feel like the worst mom ever! Remember how I said I couldn’t wait to see Emma’s reaction to the tooth fairy? Well, I saw it, and it wasn’t good. You see, the “tooth fairy” fell asleep before she did her duties! Emma came into my room at 6:30am. As soon as I heard the door open my heart sank. I knew immediately that I had fallen asleep and forgotten. She came over to my side of the bed and said “Mommy, the tooth fairy didn’t come!” and she started sobbing. I felt so bad! This was supposed to be our first visit from the tooth fairy, and I FORGOT!

I got Emma into bed with me and cuddled her. I started thinking and I asked her if she was sure that she didn’t come. I said maybe she should look around under her pillow. Maybe the tooth fairy had missed, or maybe the money fell out of the tiny pocket in her tooth pillow. While she cuddled with Scott, I went down and stuck a $5 bill under her pillow. I went back, and talked to Emma, and we all went down to look. She looked around and was thrilled when she found the money. She laughed at how silly the tooth fairy was, and how she “missed” the pillow. She was just as happy as she would have been if she had found the money when she woke up. Maybe even happier, and I am not just saying that to make myself feel better ;-) At school she kept telling people how silly her tooth fairy was.

So, all in all, I guess it worked out OK. Someday, when she is older it will make for a funny story. For now, she was just happy to get to use her tooth pillow and to have her $5 bill.

So my cousin’s wife was also derelict in her money leaving duties and told her kids that the tooth fairy is a single mom, and if one of her fairy kids was sick, she couldn’t get out and deliver the money that night but would get to it as soon as she could. Millie lost a tooth Friday nite, her second, and is so excited about it all. And we have definitely had to do the simultaneous “are you sure you checked” and slight of hand under pillow move.
