the joys of home ownership

Scott left on another trip today. He will be gone until Saturday afternoon. Normally I am OK when he goes out of town, but this time I felt sad. He was gone all week last week. He got back Sunday afternoon, spent Sunday evening and Monday with us, then left again today for the whole week.

Vicky called me when I was on my way to pick up Emma. I told her that I was feeling lonely. She invited me to come over and hang out and have dinner. It was so nice. The kids had a great time playing–even though Emma and Ian got a bit wild. I think Denali was a little bit overwhelmed by them ;-) Sorry Denali! But, I was so thankful to have such a great friend. It is so nice to have someone that I feel so close to. She is always there whenever I need her. I can just be myself around her, and she likes me no matter what. I can call her any time, day or night, and I know she will always be there for me.

Which is good, because besides being lonely this afternoon, I did need some help tonight. I got home from her house and pulled into the garage. I noticed a weird beeping sound as I was getting out of the car. I left the kids in the car and walked in. I immediately heard that my fire/carbon monoxide detector was going off. Since we have had a problem with carbon monoxide in the past, I assumed that was what was going on.(You can read about that time here.) I wanted to call the fire department, but I couldn’t find the number. I just ended up calling 911. The fire department showed up to check things out.

They got out the CO detectors and didn’t find anything. They decided that it was the fire alarm going off. But there was no smoke and clearly no fire. They thought a battery may have been dead. We tried to change one, but it didn’t fix it. The alarm kept going off, and there was no sign of carbon monoxide. They didn’t know what to do. I decided to call Brent Waterman, the electrician who did the house. He said he had never heard of that problem. He guessed that we had a bad detector.

That was it. We found the detector in Ian’s room making a funny sound. Brent said to disconnect it and see if that would solve the problem. When we disconnected it, we found that it was full of water. So, it looks like we have another leak. The water shorted out the detector and caused the whole system to go off. We finally got the ear piercing siren to stop. I called the roofer, and he will come to take a look at it tomorrow.

I am hoping that it is just some more ice damming on the roof, and not something more serious. Ahhh the joys of home ownership!
