Nora’s first day of preschool

Nora started school today.

I have been planning all along to send her to preschool in the fall. This week the paperwork was due to reserve her spot in the class. There are a few options as far as classes go: a toddler class for ages 18 months-3 years, and an early childhood class from 3-6yrs. She will turn 3 in October, so I thought it might be better for her to just start in the early childhood class since she will be so close to 3.

I spoke to the director of the school and she suggested we start her now, and just do 2 mornings a week in the toddler class. This way, she will get used to the Montessori method, and how things are done at the school. Hopefully by doing that, she will be ready to start in the early childhood class in the fall.

Despite a rough start to her morning, she had a great first day. She woke up about 5:00am and cried for most of the morning, so I was a little bit worried about how her day would go. She was extremely happy when I dropped her off. She couldn’t wait to go to the classroom to see “Snickers” the bunny. We stopped in for a quick visit and then she went out to the playground with the rest of the toddler class. She didn’t even bat an eye when I kissed her goodbye.

The teachers said she had a great day. She loved the painting work, and did 3 paintings. She also worked on her potty training. She asked to go potty 3 times, and they said she actually went every time. Maybe they will help get her motivated again and we can get her really potty trained.

When I went to pick her up, she was crying. They said when she started getting her snow clothes on to go home, she started asking for me. She was happy to see me. I picked her up and just talked to her about her day. She kept saying to me “I don’t like Leah”. Leah is her teacher ;-) I know she doesn’t really mean it. It is just one of those things she says like “I don’t want to say Hi.” She just says it to get a reaction. I walked her over to Leah to say goodbye. She looked right at Leah and said “I don’t like you.” Leah handled it like the pro she is. She just said “Well, that’s OK. We just met. It might take you a little bit of time to get to know me.”

I was happy with her first day and I know she is going to do great.
