Maybe you are teaching us to yell at our children

This morning on the way to school Emma, Ian and I were talking. Ian said that when he was 80 years old, he was going to drink coffee. We talked about how when we are adults we get to make our own choices. I explained how right now, I was trying to let them make more and more choices themselves. I explained how as adults we get to make all our own choices–some people make good choices and some choose to make bad choices. I told them that I hoped that Scott and I were teaching them well so that when they were adults, they would choose to make good choices. Emma was listening and not saying much. All of a sudden she piped up and said “Mom, well sometimes you yell at us, so maybe you are teaching us to yell at our children”. Ouch! I told her that I try very hard not to yell, but sometimes I get upset and I can’t help it. I explained that someday she would have kids of her own and she would see what I mean.
