I passed my photography test ;-)

As the date approached for my photography assignment, I got less and less worried about it. After I decided on my theme, I felt a big relief. I decided to just do people. That theme seemed a little bit boring, but that is what I like to take pictures of. It wasn’t as creative as some of the other themes: relationships, a typical day, or common things we don’t normally notice. But it worked for me. I just really like to shoot people, and that is why I got into photography in the first place.

Our assignment was to take 5 photos all related somehow. Then explain our technique and tell whether we had captured the emotional impact we were hoping for.

This was my first one. I shot this with a fairly shallow depth of field because I didn’t care about the background. I wanted the background to be blurred. I framed the shot so that the most important part of the picture–her eyes–were on the top 1/3 line of the picture. I love this shot. I think it captures Emma perfectly!

Again on this shot I chose a shallow depth of field. I wanted the telescope to be out of focus, so that your eyes would be drawn to Ian’s eyes. Again I framed the shot so Ian’s eyes were on the top 1/3 line, and I shot it close. I love how Ian looks like he is sort of laughing at me while I took the shot. I think it is funny how he used the telescope as a horn.

Once again, I used a shallow depth of field. Is there a pattern here? ;-) I like the framing of this shot. I like how it is a landscape shot. I love how I captured Nora reaching up and pointing to the hat. I got this one just before she pulled off the hat. I love how your eyes are drawn to her eyes.

guitar
This one is a street musician at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. I love how this picture captures how he feels about playing music. You can just tell from looking at him that he loved what he was doing. I sat there watching him and he was bobbing to the music and really into his song. I like how that was captured in the look on his face. The lighting was really nice, and the picture turned out very warm.

dulcimer
This shot is not as sharp as I would have liked. I do like how the hammers are blurred to show the motion as he played the dulcimer. But, I could have used a little faster shutter speed to get a sharper shot. I liked the lighting, and how the daffodils are framing him.

All in all, I think my presentation went well. I think that everyone liked my photos, and I got a lot of good feedback. I don’t know why I was so nervous–it really wasn’t that hard to present to the group ;-)
