As the date approached for my photography assignment, I got less and less worried about it. After I decided on my theme, I felt a big relief. I decided to just do people. That theme seemed a little bit boring, but that is what I like to take pictures of. It wasn’t as creative as some of the other themes: relationships, a typical day, or common things we don’t normally notice. But it worked for me. I just really like to shoot people, and that is why I got into photography in the first place.
Our assignment was to take 5 photos all related somehow. Then explain our technique and tell whether we had captured the emotional impact we were hoping for.

This was my first one. I shot this with a fairly shallow depth of field because I didn’t care about the background. I wanted the background to be blurred. I framed the shot so that the most important part of the picture–her eyes–were on the top 1/3 line of the picture. I love this shot. I think it captures Emma perfectly!

Again on this shot I chose a shallow depth of field. I wanted the telescope to be out of focus, so that your eyes would be drawn to Ian’s eyes. Again I framed the shot so Ian’s eyes were on the top 1/3 line, and I shot it close. I love how Ian looks like he is sort of laughing at me while I took the shot. I think it is funny how he used the telescope as a horn.

Once again, I used a shallow depth of field. Is there a pattern here?
I like the framing of this shot. I like how it is a landscape shot. I love how I captured Nora reaching up and pointing to the hat. I got this one just before she pulled off the hat. I love how your eyes are drawn to her eyes.

This one is a street musician at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. I love how this picture captures how he feels about playing music. You can just tell from looking at him that he loved what he was doing. I sat there watching him and he was bobbing to the music and really into his song. I like how that was captured in the look on his face. The lighting was really nice, and the picture turned out very warm.

This shot is not as sharp as I would have liked. I do like how the hammers are blurred to show the motion as he played the dulcimer. But, I could have used a little faster shutter speed to get a sharper shot. I liked the lighting, and how the daffodils are framing him.
All in all, I think my presentation went well. I think that everyone liked my photos, and I got a lot of good feedback. I don’t know why I was so nervous–it really wasn’t that hard to present to the group

Congrats, Kerry! Those are great shots!
