Heather from OMSH is having a giveaway! It looks like a fun basket of goodies. All you have to do to enter is to write the story of how you met your valentine. I don’t think I have ever written about that, so here goes.
I was a senior in high school, just about to graduate. I was having dinner with my family at The Mount Air Cafe, an old diner style restaurant in my hometown. Right across the street is the Park City golf course. My brother and I looked out ther and saw Kevin, one of our childhood friends fishing. After dinner we decided to go out there and say “Hi”. Kevin was fishing on one of the golf course ponds with a bunch of his friends. He introduced me to them all, and we just hung out for a few minutes.
The next day, I went to school. At lunch a girl that I knew came up to me and started talking to me. She asked me if I remembered a guy that I had met last night named Jeff. I had briefly met about 5 guys, so I didn’t really remember any of them very well. She told me that he wanted to meet me, and invited me to go out with a whole group of them to a movie on Friday night. Friday night came and we all got to the movie. I remember thinking that it was weird that Jeff wanted me to come out with them, because he didn’t even watch the movie. He was working at the movie theater. We went into the movie and I sat down next to a guy named Scott. We talked quite a bit, and seemed to hit it off. After the movie we all went over to one of the guys house and just hung out. I spent a lot of time hanging out with Scott and we had a really good time together. Jeff was nowhere to be found.
At the end of the night, Scott walked me out to my car. He stood there talking to me for a while before I left. Finally he said “Hey, this is really uncharacteristic of me, but would you like to go out with me next weekend?” Nice line, I thought. Sure, “really uncharacteristic” like he never asked anyone out! Still, I thought he was funny and cute, so I said yes. We talked on the phone a few times that week and I couldn’t wait until Friday.
I still remember waiting for him to pick me up. My mom and dad were there, and they wanted to meet me. I was totally embarrassed, and wanted them to just leave us alone. I was a total teenager! He came in and met everyone, and we left. We had a fun date. He took me to the Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner, and then to the 49th Street Galleria to play miniature golf. He was really funny, and I laughed the whole night. We had a great time together. At the end of the night he walked me to the door and asked me if he could kiss me! I never kissed anyone on the first date, but I thought he was so cute and it was so sweet that he asked. I can still remember kissing him on my front porch. I was so worried my parents were going to come down and open the door.
And pretty much the rest is history
I came to find out later that Jeff never wanted to meet me. It was Scott all along. But, he told the friend that asked me to go out with them that it was Jeff. It turns out that she had a crush on Scott, and she never would have asked me out if he told her it was him. And a really funny twist is that Jeff is now married to Scott’s sister Stephanie!
We were together for 6 years before we got married. I knew that I wanted to marry him just a few months after we started dating. We both talked about it, but we wanted to wait. We were so young! I really wanted to wait until one of us graduated from college. We were engaged for 2 years, and got married in June of 1997. It was the best decision I have ever made.
He is so perfect for me. We balance each other out so well. He has taught me so much. He is funny where I am serious. He has taught me not to take myself so seriously and to have more fun. He can always make me laugh. I am so happy that I married him, and I would do it all over again today.
