Flash Class at UofU

I have been taking a flash photography course at the University of Utah for the past few weeks. I have had a Speedlite for almost 2 years, but I had no idea how to really use it. I learned quite a bit in the class. Last night was the last class where we got to actually use everything we learned. I brought my background stands and used all of my own equipment. I brought Emma as a model and I got to use the new petti skirt that I got for my birthday. (Thanks Vicky!) It was fun to set everything up myself and see that I can use what I have and get some nice studio pictures. Hopefully I’ll get to do more of it in the future. I’m thinking this winter is a great time to practice!

Ooooh! Love that third one! I’m so used to your natural light style that it seems weird to see your shots from a studio setup. I like the look you’re capturing and I think the lighting still reflects your style.

What stunning photos!!

The shots with flash look really good. The king of flash photography is Neil van Niekerk. He is a professional wedding and portrait photographer and shares everything about doing flash very generously. Check out his blog at http://www.planetneil.com/tangents/ . I have learned so much about flash exposure compensation, when to use iTTL, when not to, flash direction, etc. Hope this helps you as much as it has me. Don’t get me wrong…I’ve only scratched the surface on flash photography and have tons more to learn. But it is great to have someone like Neil share so much info on his blog. Have a great week!
