Sometimes this blog makes me want to scream!!!

I always use Firefox to browse the internet. That means I always look at my blog in Firefox, too. I can’t stand Internet Explorer. It is the bane of existence for web designers. Unfortunately many, many people still use Internet Explorer. That means I have to make sure my blog looks good in Internet Explorer as well as Firefox.

This is where the problems happen. Things just don’t look the same in IE as they do in Firefox.

Today I happened to open up Internet Explorer to view one of my favorite sites, peekaboophotos.com. It just doesn’t work in Firefox so I use Internet Explorer. I have my blog set up as the home page. When it opened, this is what I saw:

IE7screenshot

The font was HUGE in the body–both the title and the post.

The thing that made me want to scream was that I hadn’t made ANY changes to my blog theme settings. This lovely issue just showed up all on it’s own for no reason.

Any time I have a problem like this it usually takes hours to fix. The main problem is that I don’t know very much about CSS. I have learned a lot since I started this blog, but I still have a lot more to learn. I usually end up begging others to help me. Heather from Oh My Stinkin Heck has helped me more times than she should. This time I found the Wordpress Support Forums. I posted my problem there and I was actually able to solve it without having to stay up all night.

This is how it is supposed to look, and how it looks now:

I just wish I could get everyone to switch to Firefox so I won’t have any more of these wacky problems!

Funny Photo Friday 01

I have been watching this meme over at Blissfully Domestic for a few months now. I kept meaning to enter, but I never quite did. I figure with Ian around I have no shortage of funny photos. I might as well make Friday my day to post them, and I could possibly win a prize too.

So check back Friday for my first Funny Photo Friday.

NaBloPoMo December 2008

nablo1208.120x90

I have officially joined NaBloPoMo for December.

I enjoyed posting every day in November, and I think joining NaBloPoMo again will help give me the motivation I need to post every day in December too.

Here’s to 31 days of posts!

Another NaBloPoMo completed

Well, NaBloPoMo is officially over for another year. Once again I was able to post every day, and I really enjoyed it. This year, I felt like I was able to come up with something pretty interesting to write about every day. I think I improved over last year. I went back and looked at some of my posts from NaBloPoMo last year, and some of them just barely qualified as a post.

Every year in November I have great intentions of keeping up with the daily postings. I can usually do it for part of December before I start tapering off. I have been tempted to join Blog 365 where you blog every day for a year. Maybe I’ll do the December NaBloPoMo and then see if I feel up to starting the Blog 365 in January.

Either way, I am happy that I had another successful November NaBloPoMo! Maybe I’ll even win a prize this year ;-)

It’s November and NaBloPoMo is here!

nablopomo2008

National Blog Posting Month is here again! For the uninitiated, NaBloPoMo is simple; write a post a day for 30 days. That’s it. November is the traditional month for it, developed after the idea of National Novel Writing Month where you challenge yourself to write a novel in 30 days. This will be my 3rd year participating. Posting every day for a month really got my blog going last year. I know I might sound crazy, but I am actually looking forward to it!

Moving to Liquid Web

I am going to be moving my blog host from Very Commerce to Liquid Web tonight. Hopefully everything will go smoothly. I apologize if my blog is down for a bit. See you on my new server ;-)

UPDATE: It looks like everything is working and the move went smoothly. I also upgraded WordPress, so please let me know if anything looks funny or isn’t working correctly.

New blog host

I finally found the time to work on my blog. I had an hour or so and I decided to work my way through Heather’s tutorial.

Her tutorial was great, unfortunately my web hosting service, Very Commerce, is not.

I followed the tutorial and first deactivated all of my plugins. However, I ran into a problem right away when I logged into my c-panel. Very Commerce was supposed to provide me with a c-panel with Fantastico. When I clicked on the Fantastico link I immediately got an error message that said Fantastico is not installed. UGH!!! I sent a few emails to Alex at Very Commerce and I got no response.

So, I couldn’t follow Heather’s great tutorial because I don’t have Fantastico. She gave me another option and suggested I use a WordPress plugin to automatically upgrade. I found the one to use and installed it. I tried to run it but it said it was unable to activate the plugin because of a “fatal error”. UGH again!

Since I couldn’t get any customer service whatsoever from Very Commerce, I had no choice but to switch hosts. Everyone seems to love Liquid Web, so I decided to switch to them. I got all signed up and called them to switch over. Unfortunately I am still being bogged down by Very Commerce. Apparently they need his permission to switch over MY DATA. It doesn’t make much sense to me since it all belongs to me. So now I am stuck waiting for him AGAIN.

Liquid Web has opened a ticket with him and is waiting for him to respond. Hopefully he will respond better to them than he has to me!

A few blog issues

I really need to upgrade my WordPress. I looked around on the internet a bit, but I just didn’t find anything that made it seem easy enough. I just know it is going to take hours and lots of tweaking to get it right. Unfortunately, lately I don’t have hours to spend on my computer ;-)

Imagine my surprise when one of my favorite bloggers, Oh My Stinking Heck, started up her WordPress Wednesdays again! It was largely due to her and Jessica, from Balancing Everything, that I got my own self hosted blog in the first place. When I first started my own blog I went through every one of Heather’s WordPress Wednesday posts and made my blog so much better.

A few weeks ago I emailed Heather about upgrading my WordPress and she told me to wait a bit and she would write a post about it. And she did! Now I just need to find some time to follow her advice and get my blog all up to date.

Heather has been such a great help to me with this blog. I really appreciate all of her help. I have sent her so many emails asking for help with little issues. Many times I spend hours searching for solutions. When I finally give up, I email her, and she always has answers. Thanks, Heather, for taking time out from your work and family to help me (and so many other people) with their questions!
