A new discovery: the Rambutan

rambutan01 We tried a new fruit today. It is called a Rambutan. I have seen it before here in Maui, at the farmer’s market, but have never tired it. My mom bought some the other day and we all ate them.

They are really cool looking from the outside. They look kind of scary and spiny, but they are not at all. The spines are soft and easily crushed. If you cut the skin you can kind of “pop” the top off to reveal the fruit inside.

rambutan03 Inside the fruit looks kind of like a grape without skin, and it kind of tastes that way too. Only there is a very large oval pit in the middle. The fruit comes off the pit easily. They are sweet and tasty. The kids really liked them.

They are really cool to look at, and kind of fun to eat, although I don’t think I would eat more than 1 or 2. I’m not sure what people actually do with them, but it was fun to try them and experiment with something new.
